FAQ

General Information

The Washington Guaranteed Admissions Program (WAGAP) aims to increase college access by assuring students that the answer to “Will I get in?” is “Yes.” It is a partnership between Washington public universities, school districts, and high schools, coordinated by the Council of Presidents. WAGAP promotes a college-going culture statewide, starting with the belief that all students are “college material.” It reduces anxiety around higher education by guaranteeing admission to students who have met the university requirements.

You are offered guaranteed admissions to the participating universities if you have a current cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher and completion of the required coursework for college in high school by the time you graduate. Your school district or high school must be a WAGAP partner, and you must opt in to share your academic and directory information with participating universities.

Participating in WAGAP is optional but encouraged. Students are encouraged to opt in to share their directory and academic information with participating institutions. If you choose not to apply to any of the participating universities, you can opt out of all communications. Applying to a participating university does not obligate you to attend. You still get to choose the university that works best for you.

Guaranteed admissions offer admission to a student and then requires the student to apply to the institution. General admissions require a student to first apply to institution(s), and then a student may be offered admission. Both are considered equal paths to admissions; universities do not give preference for one path over another.

The offer of guaranteed admissions ensures acceptance to the participating universities. The guarantee is predicated on maintaining the GPA and course requirements for WAGAP. Guaranteed admission does not guarantee enrollment in a specific degree program. Students should reach out to the institution(s) they are interested in enrolling in to discuss specific degree programs.

Yes. Even if you do not meet the guaranteed admissions requirements, you should still consider applying to a Washington public university. If you want to go to college, are thinking of college, or have not considered college, there is a place for you in Washington at one of the state’s public universities. We want to welcome all students to our universities.

WAGAP Student Requirements

To be eligible for guaranteed admissions, you must: (1) Earn a cumulative, unweighted 3.0 GPA or higher, and (2) Complete all college-required courses in high school. If you meet the requirements or are on track to meet the requirements, you are guaranteed admission to the participating institutions.

Washington public universities consider the whole student in the admissions review process. Holistic admissions consider grades, courses—both the type and the level at which taken—along with other information to make an admissions decision. This may include leadership in activities outside of the school environment or other examples a student may provide. The state sets minimum admission criteria.

Admissions is as much a standardized practice as it is influenced by the diverse range of student experience and education. It is challenging to capture the nuance of every application into a single statement for all students and institutions. You are strongly encouraged to reach out and discuss concerns so we can partner together. We invite you into conversation with us.

No. Your citizenship status has no bearing on whether you can participate in WAGAP.

If you are an international student or a non-resident student, including an out-of-state student who may graduate from a private Washington high school, you should apply to the university of interest through the general admissions process.

No. The unweighted, cumulative GPA is one of the two requirements to be eligible for guaranteed admissions. You are eligible for guaranteed admissions if you earn a 3.0 or higher GPA and complete all required college coursework in high school.

Most institutions admit students based on the time of application. Unless the transcript shows a dramatic turn of events, such as a student’s GPA falling below a 2.0 or missing more than three years of CADRs, admission status is unlikely to change.

Guaranteed admissions is one path to university acceptance. Most students are accepted to Washington public universities through general admissions. General admissions is an equally viable path to admissions to a university. You are strongly encouraged to complete an admissions application to be considered for general admissions.

You must meet all college course requirements by enrollment in the fall term immediately following high school graduation to be guaranteed admission. If you have not met all course requirements, pathways and opportunities still exist for you. You are strongly encouraged to reach out to the contacts for each participating institution to learn more.

The participating college or university you applied to will reach out to you. A slight deviation from the WAGAP-required GPA will likely not disqualify you from getting admitted through general admissions. If your cumulative GPA is below 3.0, you are still encouraged to apply to a Washington public university.

Next Steps

Washington public universities do not require the ACT or SAT for admissions purposes. Students should consult test policy information for each participating university.

Yes. WAGAP lets you know your options for Washington public universities that are committed to admitting you through guaranteed admissions. However, you must complete an admissions application to secure your spot. You may qualify for an admissions application waiver. Be sure to provide an alternative email address (other than your school address) and watch your email for information from the participating universities. The universities you select to apply to will provide you with next steps.

Yes. Applying to more than one university can be a great idea, especially if you are not totally sure where you want to go or what you want to study yet. You may qualify for an admissions application waiver. Be sure to list all of the universities you have applied for when you submit your FAFSA or WASFA to ensure you get financial aid information to compare universities you are interested in.

No need to worry about any applications you may have already submitted. Your application will still be processed and there is no need to re-apply.

Each participating university has a slightly different deferral process. Make sure to check in with the university if you want to start in a future year. It is not guaranteed after one year out of high school that the guaranteed admissions decision will hold. You may need to reapply to attend.

Choosing a University

If a Washington public university isn’t listed, it is not a WAGAP participant, so you may not see a university you are interested in on the list. If there are other universities you are interested in, you will want to apply through that university’s general admissions process.

No. Guaranteed admissions does not limit your choices. We encourage you to apply to all the universities you are interested in, regardless of their participation in WAGAP.
